BBS Relief & Covid19 Assistance

Relief assistance in January 2021 started out much the same way that we closed out 2020. The Relief Committee approved seven requests for assistance. Many of these cases continue to be challenging because of the impact of the pandemic.

In working with the Consulate in Los Angeles the committee approved repatriation of two individuals back to the UK. One Brit had been sleeping under bridges, living homeless in Los Angeles. Within hours of learning about this case, the BBS was able to pay for and arrange a rapid Covid19 test, provide funds for food, and secure a flight to Manchester. Another case involved returning a grandmother to see her newly born grand baby in Leeds. The BBS arranged a rapid Covid19 test, covered incidentals such as food and taxi as well as a one-way flight. In working with the Consulate in San Francisco, the BBS covered the cost a certified birth certificate, emergency travel documents, and a one-way flight for a homeless Brit who recently recovered from Covid19. Three aid recipients each received $1,500 Covid19 Grants. None of them have been able to find a reliable source of income since March 2020.

As we send out this newsletter today, we have received two more inquires for assistance.

Farewell, Captain Sir Tom Moore

This week we mourned the loss of Captain Sir Tom Moore, the celebrated centenarian who on his 100th birthday completed 100 laps of his garden. With the humble goal of raising £1,000 for the National Health Service during lockdown, he captured the hearts of the nation and spawned a movement, raising close to £33 million for NHS Charities Together.

Rest in Peace Sir Tom Moore, an inspiration to us all.
