Location: Point Reyes National Seashore’s Drake’s Beach Ken Patrick Visitor Center

Join our friends from the Drake Navigators Guild for a visit to the land of Drake (1579), Cermeño (1595) and Vizcaino (1603) in August and September. The plan is to meet at the visitor center for a short presentation and then hike to Drake’s Cove. Details as follows:

Schedule for 13 August:

  • Noon – meet at Point Reyes National Seashore’s Drake’s Beach Ken Patrick Visitor Center. 30-40 minute presentation on the history of Drake, the era, the voyage and the ship. (Check your visitor center – hikers often go to the wrong visitor center!).
  • 12:45 PM to 1:00 PM depart on hike. Hike to Drake’s Cove – Drake’s landing site with discussion along the way. This is about 1-1/4 miles each way on hard-packed sand: flat.
  • Approx. 3:00 PM –Arrive back at Drake’s Beach.
  • This is a public hike being offered by the Drake Navigators Guild.

  • 9 AM – meet at Point Reyes National Seashore’s Drake’s Beach Ken Patrick Visitor Center. 30-40 minute.
  • Presentation on the history of Drake, the era, the voyage and the ship. (Check your visitor center – hikers often go to the wrong visitor center!).
  • 9:45 AM – 10 AM depart on hike. Hike to Drake’s Cove – Drake’s landing site with discussion along the way.
  • Approx. Noon –Arrive back at Drake’s Beach.
  • This is a public hike being offered by the Tomales Regional History Center and the Drake Navigators Guild.

Bring:

  • Folding chair for talk at open area at Ken Patrick Visitors Center
  • Own lunch if desired. No services will likely be available at Drake’s Beach.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Most of the hike is along the hard-sand beach
  • Layers of jackets & clothing. It can be warm, almost hot, or quite windy and cold.
  • Backpack with sunscreen, water, snacks
  • Camera
  • Please note, per NPS regulations no dogs. We recommend contacting NPS directly for details.
