Fall Updates From The BBS

Relief Update

The following relief cases and their outcomes underscore the incredible impact that compassionate support can bring to those in need.

Compassionate Assistance

A determined applicant reached out to the BBS with an appeal for life-changing financial assistance. Having secured approval for Section 8 housing, the applicant faced a daunting hurdle: the upfront deposit required for the apartment. This deposit stood between them and the opportunity to truly benefit from the housing they had been granted. The BBS took a special interest in this case, considering the applicant’s status as both a pensioner and a veteran. We are thrilled to share that this story has a happy ending: the applicant has successfully transitioned into their new home.

Covid Assistance

The Consulate in Los Angeles drew our attention to a situation involving a family vacationing in Southern California. Tragedy struck when the family’s patriarch contracted Covid and, devastatingly, lost his battle. The family found themselves stranded in Los Angeles, postponing their return home until they could repatriate his remains. In the face of unforeseen and extended circumstances, they sought assistance to alleviate the burden of daily expenses. The Relief Committee unanimously agreed that their extended stay in the U.S., which was far beyond their original plans, qualified for financial relief.

Financial Assistance Impacted by the Writers’ Strike

A heartfelt appeal came to our attention from an aspiring actress based in LA whose acting prospects were lost by the ongoing writers’ strike. Amid the challenging aftermath of the Global Pandemic, her financial recuperation was already a daunting journey, further compounded by the unanticipated blow of the strike. Understanding the many layers of her predicament, the Relief Committee extended its support by offering funds to alleviate the strains of rent, transportation, and essential needs.

Homeless Repatriation

Our collaboration with a social worker at a local outreach clinic in Los Angeles attests to the heartening journey of a homeless Brit. After a months-long struggle on the streets of Venice Beach prompted him to reach out for aid, he expressed his interest in finding his way back to Leeds. With immense satisfaction, we share the uplifting news that he has successfully reunited with the safety of a home and temporary housing in Leeds.

Executive Office Update

Jennifer Baker

Head of Relief

After six incredible years as Executive Director for the British Benevolent Society, it is time for me to take on new challenges and pursue other opportunities. I want to express my deepest gratitude for the unforgettable journey I have had as Executive Director with the BBS. Over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing the incredible impact we have made on the lives of Brits in need. It has been an honor to be a part of an organization that is dedicated to making the world a better place. Working with the BBS community of members and alongside such passionate and committed volunteers has been a source of inspiration and motivation every day.

I cannot overstate the profound appreciation I hold for the volunteer Board of Directors who have generously dedicated their time, skills, and hearts to support the mission of the BBS. Their unwavering commitment and contributions have been the driving force behind the success of our initiatives; my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of them. The kindness and compassion they have shown will forever be etched in my memory. My time as Executive Director has been a transformative and fulfilling experience. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones such as providing an unprecedented amount of financial assistance during a Global Pandemic while continuing to bridge the British community throughout the west coast. I am confident that the dedication and passion of the Board of Directors will continue to guide the BBS toward even greater heights. May it continue to grow and thrive, impacting the lives of those most in need.

However, this isn’t our ultimate farewell! I’ll remain in my role as the Head of Relief to support the vital mission of extending assistance and relief to British nationals facing hardships. I’ll collaborate closely with the Relief Committee (which is instrumental in evaluating aid requests), and I’ll continue to convey the narratives that highlight how relief efforts tangibly uplift those in the greatest need.

Once again, thank you for the unwavering support and the opportunity to serve as Executive Director for you. I will forever cherish the memories and friendships I have forged during my time in the role.
